Boiler hack at dorkbot

I hacked a demand heater and made a boiler out of it see it tomorrow if you come...
will be unveiling a new boiler I finished only a few hrs ago at tomorrows Dorkbot.
laughingsquid.com/dorkbot-sf-44-at-the-gallery-with-no-name/

The boiler weighs about 25 lbs, and at this point puts out about 1/2 hp
After doing the math it would appear it should be able to put out about 3-5 hp with the right burner, With some work I could get it into a large bike frame.
The nice part is it takes only about 3 1/2 min to go from dead cold to 45psi.
I will be demonstrating it at the talk.
This year I'm thinking of building a new powerplant by modding an I.C. engine from something like a Geo Metro. Anyone else interested in this sort of thing?

It's dorkbot time again. However, this is a very special dorkbot where 100% of the proceeds will go directly to support our friend and long-time dorkbot supporter, Todd Blair. Todd a 15+ year veteran of SRL as well as collaborator with Tim North, Chico McMurtrie, Lynn Hershman, and countless other visionaries, suffered serious head trauma in an unfortunate accident in Amsterdam after the recent SRL performance there for Robodock. He remains in a coma and his injuries are severe. Due to the generous donations of Kyle Minor, Eric Paulos, dorkbotSF, many SRL members, and our speakers, we are able to pass on all of the proceeds from this dorkbot to the family of Todd Blair for his recovery efforts which are expected to be quite substantial.

Please join us in celebrating Todd's recovery in this special dorkbotSF event.

Dorkbot DC mtg. Monday, Sept. 10 7PM

Dorkbot DC - Next Meeting:

Monday, September 10, 2007
7-9 PM

Marian Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences
6th and E Streets, NW
Washington, DC 20001
http://www.koshlandscience.org/visitor/dandp.jsp

Cost: Free

The September meeting of Dorkbot DC will have presentations by three
artists:

Mechatronic and robotic artist Thomas Edwards will present his work
"Touch" which allows two individuals to physically touch each other
over the Internet. During the meeting, Edwards will demonstrate
touching fingers between Washington, DC, and Toronto, Canada
with the help of Liav Koren at the University of Toronto's Faculty of
Architecture, Landscape and Design.

Conrad Barski will present his work on the PicnicMob.Org web site.
PicnicMob is a concept to create "flash mob" picnics in parks of major
U.S. cities, but it assigns each participant to a location in the park
so that they are near other participants with similar interests
(calculated using simulated annealing).

Interactive video artist Philip Kohn will discus some of his new work
that combines live video cameras with computers to place participants
in virtual worlds. "The Looking Glass" is an evolving interactive video
work that encourages participants to move about in silly ways by
rewarding them with cool effects when they do. "Through the Hedge"
will blend a large ceramic mural with an embedded huge LCD flat
screen to create an artificial real-time jungle including magical creatures
that do things to you when you touch them. "Feeling Lucky" crawls the
web as a stream of consciousness in pictures using Google image and
Google search. Finally, "Pastry" shows organic layers of texture that
come out of the screen, without the need for 3D glasses.

Plus an informal "Afterdork" afterwards at a nearby establishment TBD.

For more info, see:

See you there!

Call For Makers!

Dear Makers,

We are pleased to announce Bay Area Maker Faire 2007!

Organized by the staff of MAKE and CRAFT magazines, Maker Faire is a newfangled fair that brings together science, art, craft an engineering in a fun, energized, and exciting public forum. The aim is to inspire people of all ages to roll up their sleeves and become makers. This family-friendly event showcases the amazing work of all kinds of makers--anyone who is embracing DIY and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience. Last year, we had 20,000 people at Maker Faire.

Maker Faire Bay Area will take place May 19-20, 2007 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. We are also adding Maker Faire Austin for October 20-21, 2007 at the Travis County Fairgrounds. This call is primarily for Maker Faire Bay Area but you can indicate if you are interested in participating in Maker Faire Austin.

We encourage you to join the fun and propose a maker exhibit, performance or workshop. You can submit a proposal through the web using the link described below or you can come show us your work at a Maker Faire "audition" on Saturday, February 24 at TechShop in Menlo Park, CA.

http://www.makerfaire.com

Proposals: We invite proposals for Maker workbench exhibits, workshops, presentations and performances for the Maker Faire. We are interested in proposals from individuals as well as from groups such as hobbyist clubs and schools.

Maker Workbench: Our standard setup for Makers is a six-foot long workbench. You can use this workbench to display your work and/or demonstrate how you make something. Some makers don't need workbenches, typically because they have a large object or they set up outside. Please provide a short description of what you make and what you will bring to Maker Faire. Please link to photographs or videos of what you make. Let us know about any requirements you have, such as electricity, Internet, ventilation, etc.

Interactive Performance: We're seeking performances that will engage and entertain the attendees and enable them to interact in a fun way. The performances may be tied to a stage or roving through the fairgrounds as a kind of street theatre. Performances could be musical or theatrical, but they could also be a collaborative building process. For example, you might work with attendees to put something large together in an hour.

Presentation: These includes audio-visual presentations intended for showing a project (or process) that cannot be brought to the faire, or a special project that requires AV resources. These presentations are limited to 20 minutes. Please describe the topic of your presentation and what kind of media (audio/video) that you will have. As a general rule, PowerPoint presentations are not appropriate for this event unless they are unusually entertaining.

Demonstration Workshop: A demonstration workshop is a show-and-tell session on how to make something. We're looking for makers who can demonstrate (and teach) particular skills, techniques or processes. You should start off by explaining your materials and tools and then step-through a build process, sharing your knowledge and interacting with the audience. Sessions should be under 30 minutes in length and may be repeated on the program. Please describe the subject of your workshop and what kind of setup you need for it.

Application Form: Please go to the following URL and fill it out to apply for participation as a maker. http://makerfaire.com/bayarea/2007/proposal/

All proposals will be reviewed and we will notify makers of acceptance via email by March 19, 2007.

NOTE: Presenters whose talks are accepted will receive free registration to Maker Faire. We cannot pay for travel and accommodations. (We do make exceptions under some circumstances.) If you have any questions about participating in Maker Faire, please contact Natalie Villalobos by email: info@makerfaire.com. Please let Natalie know if you plan to come to the audition at TechShop.

Key Points:

Warehouse space coming available in SOMA creative complex

Hey Kids-

This is the first low key announcement as many details are still up in the air.
Just want to do a sweep and see whos interested in whats coming up and than hammer out details over the next few weeks.
In question are the opening dates, from 1-3 months from today.

The space has a working title of "the complex"... because it is.
We are a series of small warehouse spaces connected by a large undeveloped dirt lot that I have been slowly absorbing over the past year.
I have recently assumed the sole lease on the "gem" property, a 4500sqft warehouse with tall ceilings in the main performance and work area.
We are located near 5th and Folsom with extremely easy access to everything and the east bay.

It has three movie theaters, a tiki bar, a wolf range gas stove, parking and shared work / performance area with 24' ceilings.
Connected to it are 8000sqf of small business and artists studios and 10,000sqft of undeveloped lot.
Current co-tenants are an office for our non-profit 510c3: Arena Interplay
Kiosk and digital signage business rental and service workshop: Friendlyway Inc
Myself, and I have a small performance/ rehearsal space upstairs connected to my room.
A Small graphics/effects studio, still in development, with blue screen.

A plan for the usage is creating a digital video production facility for projects and would like the tenants to participate in the growth of this or something completely different they have to bring to the table.
The potential tenant must be a DIY'er as the space is still somewhat raw (although I appreciate it that way) and we are responsible for any upkeep of the builiding. No help from the building owner.
There is NO LEGAL LIVE within the buildings, commercial LEASE only.
So no residential rights can be extended to this scenario, still the lease is fair as long as we pay the rent and dont cause any trouble for the building owner with other neighbors or the city. This is why its important for the potential tenant to have a business license, they're easy to get and I can help you if you dont allready. I'm assuming you catch my drift and we can discuss details in a one on one.

I am seeking two tenants for sizeable upstairs studios.
We each should be self sufficient but definately am looking to build a collaborative community out of this project.
The rents are $750-$800 each/month- + $50 for the first parking space, $75 for any additional parking.
+ Utiitlies which average around $75+ for gas/electric/garbage/internet
+ Business Insurance (about $250 year shared).
Deposit I have to pay is twice rent, we can negotiate a payment plan for the deposit but it should total $1500.
If building owner increases rent, than individual rent would be affected. SO far 3 years without increase.

If you cant pay your rent and cant deal with having occasional public activities and clients in the space than please dont apply.
As the leaseholder I am responsible for the actions of the tenants and have just completed taking over the lease to proactively solve these problems.
Full disclosure and communication being key for positive development.

I personally have a history with group art spaces dating from being a co-founder of cellspace in 96, an early developer of monkey fresh in 2002, Front Room Gallery in New York in 98 and the Farenheit in Kansas City in 2000.
The long term goal is to purchase a building that can support our activities and create a business plan based on our current model to achieve those ends.
I am a bay area native and am 36. Have a background and degree in film and video, and am currently the DOO for friendlyway inc and am in charge of the companies operations out of the warehouse. I am in league with several other developments like this one and plan to incorporate speakeasy cinema (the current venue title) as a supporting agent to help this type of growth.
I've priced the rooms to be affordable but you still have to have your shit together to make it work.
I am interested in starting this process today so I can find the best matches for our space and get them on board as soon as identified.

If you have a ton of storage needs you should consider an off site location or purchase a shipping container to put into our yard.

Please send queries or interests/ideas bad jokes to:
skot kuiper
skot@videoamp.org

thanks and feel free to distribute this to interested parties.

presenters:

Jill Miller - How to Hunt for Bigfoot: Satellites, Solar Power and Triangles
Jill and company have been holed up in bigfoot country in the woods somewhere armed only with a 24x7 satellite uplink waiting for bigfoot (or all you flash mobbing gorillas) to appear. Come see what is quite possibly the strangest thing to do with electricity out in the woods!

Scott Minneman & Dale MacDonald (Onomy Labs) - Make-Tanks: a New Paradigm for Innovation
Scott and Dale will talk about Make-Tanks as opposed to the typical thinktanks. They're different in that a make-tank is all about tinkering and hands-on experimentation being a part of discovering emerging technologies and scientific diescoveries. Come see PARC alumni Scott and Dale geek out with their various toys and talk about the tools, technologies, and war-stories of making interactive story telling devices.

just a quick note of praise in honor of doug repetto (founder of dorkbot). he's a great guy. i did the artbots show in dublin that he organized a month ago, and he's a very down-to-earth, nice guy. after meeting him, the whole dorkbot phenomenon made complete sense. if you have the chance to work with him, do it.

I'm designing a couple of art projects that will need PIC control mostly software PWM routines driving LEDs, real easy stuff. I have tried to do this on my own, but I have discovered that I'm not really cut out for programming. If anyone feels they can lend a hand, it would make life so much easier. I'd prefer to stay in a C environment (CCS C to be specific) or whatever works for you is fine. Send me a message if you're interested.
Thanks!

Hey Dorkbotters-

My team at Yahoo! Hotjobs is in dire need of more webdevs- both contract, and permanent. On-site, full time.

HTML and CSS hard-coding knowledge, a must. Java, PHP, and other codebases, hard-knowledge and/or working-knowledge, a plus.

Pay is great, the team is fun, free coffee/espresso drinks, yummy subsidized cafeteria on campus, and Yahoo! now has a bus to Sunnyvale for SF commuters, with WiFi on it. I ride the bullet train as I'm close to the 22nd st. station, and door-to-door that is about an hour.

Please e.mail me with a resume at: nalter@hotjobs.com, if you're interested.

monochrom - Experience the Experience of 1 Baud
The International Code of Signals serves to facilitate communication at sea. It defines the meaning of alphabetical identification codes for safety and navigation purposes. The key for "sending" was drafted by a committee of the British Board of Trade in 1855 and published in 1857. The 1969 edition, revised in 2003, is still in use today. We have expanded the flag alphabet, not just so that it also includes the @ sign, but so that city dwellers have access to pure communication. The flag alphabet will be taught in a workshop lasting several hours. After a few days set aside for study and practice, we would like, in the form of a competition, to send an identical message across the city over two equally long routes simultaneously. Will it work?

monochrom is an art-technology-philosophy group of basket weaving enthusiasts and theory do-it-yourselfers having its seat in Vienna and Zeta Draconis. monochrom is the super-affirmation of the globalization trap. monochrom has existed in this (and every other) form since 1993.
Workshop: July 20, 7:30 PM.
Event: July 22, 5 PM.

BLOWHARD: respiring the rhetoric of fear culture

just had to show and tell an alternative art-game system I co-developed.
Basically a breathe controlled 'strong person' game contest. You have to hyperventilate faster than your opponent to advance thru the Homeland Security Departments alert level - thru each level fear culture media plays - it's chaotic and a-political in that the media is derived from conspiracy theory and pro government propoganda and truly crazy sh*t. You can check out more info at - http://quasi-cause.com/blowhard/index.php

more tech stuff will be posted to the site soon - but basically it's custom electronics, parallel processing PIC controllers, RS232 comm to Max/MSP/Jitter.

But don't know how to build one. Can anyone give me advice?

I'm envisioning a structure that will encircle my tent at Burning Man, be about 8-10 ft tall, with a 12 ft diameter across the top, an 8 ft diameter footprint, and, ideally, be wind storm resistant.

At first I thought of building the whole thing out of papier mache, then of fabric, wooden ribs and irrigation tube hoops, now PVC pipes???

I am open to any suggestions about how to proceed and would be very grateful for your feedback or ideas.

Please help me ensure that my 24-hr Mad Tea Party takes place as scheduled. A giant cake goes to the friendly, wonderful, generous person with the most useful design advice!!!

Thank you!

DORKBOT-SEA 2ND ANNIVERSARY MEETING AND TESLA EXTRAVAGANZA!!! At CoCA on June 1st, experience 3 TESLAPHILE SPEAKERS, VIDEO of Tesla-related weirdnesses and a DJ not afraid of playing OMD’s Tesla Girls in public! BRING out your Telsa-inspired devices: we have PRIZES for any Tesla Coil that arrives on the night (we will be shutting down the alley; bring your own generators), plus MORE PRIZES for the best coil, for Jacob’s Ladders, and any and other Tesla-inspired device, from medical instruments to plasma balls to old radios, that you might care to share. More in a flash…!!

--

THE CALL OUT .... from the dorkbotsea announce list at,
http://music.columbia.edu/mailman/listinfo/dorkbotsea-announce

Message:
Date: Sat, 16 Apr 2005 13:18:35 -0700
From: "Kate Seekings"

our 2nd anniversary dorkbot meeting on June 1st will be a Tesla-themed extravaganza, with three Teslaphile speakers and as many Tesla-inspired artworks and devices, from weird medical instruments to plasma balls to Jacob's Ladders, as we can find. There will be Tesla video, and OMD's Tesla Girls on the decks. It's going to be a classic evening.

However. what self-respecting Tesla night could be complete without a Tesla Coil? And what have I not yet been able to find one, solitary example of in the whole of our region??

Hence the DORKBOTSEA 2ND ANNIVERSARY TESLA CHALLENGE.

* We will be offering PRIZES - interesting, fun, wild, woolly,
whacked-out prizes, being collected right now - to ANYONE bringing a
working Tesla Coil that they and/or their friends have made!
* We will give PRIZES - smaller than the above, but still most definitely worth having - as a FINDERS FEE to anyone who tracks down an existing, working Tesla Coil and its owner, and persuades them to bring it along for the night!
* We will be offering a SPECIAL PRIZE - more exciting than all the other prizes - to the BEST TESLA COIL, as decided by on-the-night audience appreciation!
* Other Tesla devices (Jacob's Ladders and the like) are VERY WELCOME INDEED, and may also receive PRIZES!

If this inspires or beguiles you, or if you know someone it might
inspire or beguile, please, get to work - and let me know about your
efforts at dorkbotsea AT dorkbot (dot) org. Frankly, I'll be on
tenterhooks 'til I hear from you. Without a Tesla Coil, there's a slim
chance that it might be too embarrassing to even have a 2nd anniversary Tesla-themed evening after all.

contact: dorkbotsea AT dorkbot (dot) org

Tribe.net is debuting custom profile designs in an upcoming release, and we'd like to feature designs by our users -- we know we have lots of creatives in our user base, and we want to showcase their talents.
BORG2 first art grant opportunity

(excerpted from a forthcoming bullhorn, copied at end)

NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS, HERE'S THE PILE 'O PENNIES ART GRANT DISASTER
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The BORG2 Ad Hoc Action Collective, aka the people not voted into any kind of office, have been counting up all the change collected from the recent FLYING PIG SEX DISASTER fundraiser and rolling it into, well, rolls. And then depositing the rolls with the bank people. And now they're tired of all this rolling.

The delightful Marc came up with this idea (paraphrased for your convenience):

1. Gosh darn we still have to roll a ton of pennies 2. How can I convince someone else to do this?
3. Maybe the AC could GRANT this butt load of pennies to an artist so we won't have to roll them anymore and an artist could be supported to make their art, which is why we are here rolling all this god-forsaken change in the first place.

Thus was born: the NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS, HERE'S THE PILE 'O PENNIES ART GRANT DISASTER.

Here is the deal: BORG2 has a bunch of pennies and other misshapen but still legal US tender coins in its possession. Rather than spend about ten manhours each for every ten dollars of coins left, BORG2 is going to grant THIS HUGE PILE OF COINS TO ONE LUCKY ARTIST. An real art grant, immediate resource gratification, just like we've been talking about for the last six million years.

The rules and conditions:

- The dollar amount of the remaining pennies (and other coins) is somewhere around ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS.

- All those interested in receiving this grant have one week from today forward to submit a project proposal. Proposals will be posted publicly to the BORG2.org website in the order received.

- All submitted proposals will be subject to a vote by the entire BORG2 community, using the Demagogue voting software that was created by the mysterious Dr. Fiasco and used in the January elections, and is now new and improved, to the point where it can handle "millions of voters."

- The project deemed "most interesting" by the entire community, as determined through this vote, will receive all the remaining coins at a special ceremony, details of which to be announced.

Format of proposals:

The format used to submit a proposal is very important. Non-compliance with format will mark submitter as a non-linear thinker. Please comply with all following blank spaces:

Your Name:
Project Title:
One line project description:
Compose a DF1LM (dfilm.com/index_movie_start.html) explaining your project and submit link to it:
Submit a URL to an online drawing (optional):

Note that the primary vehicle for this application is DF1LM. Those who have been following the BORG2 tribe and various other tribes in the Outer BORGverse will know that DF1LM has, um, kinda become the communication medium of choice for BORG2 endeavors. In fact, the Art Council has been deep in debate as to whether all official AC communications should proceed through DF1LM, although there has been no decision yet. In the meantime, however, Jim composed a stunt grant application that found issue in several panties, and many DF1LMs flew here and there shortly thereafter, as well as before, through the rigors of time travel (news travels BEYOND FAST in the BORGverse). The record (or wreckage) can be found on the BORG2 tribe (borg2.tribe.net), and also on the DF1LM tribe (dfilm.tribe.net).

EMAIL IS DEAD. THE FUTURE BELONGS TO DF1LM. (Can we get a sponsorship?)

Remember, the deadline for proposals is Wednesday, March 2. Voting will take place Friday, March 4.
WWHD?

"There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. And that, I think, was the handle -- that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting -- on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark -- the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."
(WWHD?:

It's important to follow protocol, especially when you're counting pennies. And why not?
Ben Franklin probably had something to say on the matter -- Ben had something to say for just about every goddamn thing, and that's why we put him on the flag. Not Nixon... he never did understand the worth of a penny, or much of anything else for that matter, at least anything decent or legal. Nixon threw his pennies into the trash, along with empty bottles of Old Grandad and Maalox and all the paper records from his orphan-purchase deal with the Chinese, and because of that he died homeless and penniless. They buried him in a cardboard box and tossed him on a junk freighter headed out to the Indian Ocean, which is exactly what he deserved, but that's beside the point: he didn't watch his pennies, and that's why we call it "penniless." Historians take note: dead presidents are amusing, but not nearly as funny as unshaven ones. Stand back!)

BORG2 AND THE NEW AMAZING TECHNICOLOR WEBSITE
---------------------------------------------

Up now for public review, comments, and criticism. Please do not direct your review, comments and/or criticism to this correspondent, who will lose it. Charlie Gadeken has asked the such comments be directed to: borg2.tribe.net/. Be nice to him when you do it, because he and the rest of the AC put a lot of time and effort into this while we sat back in our La-Z Boys and hollered at them for not having a website up.

Here is the temporary address for the new site:
http://66.216.120.27/index.php3

There is also a public wiki for BORG2 in the works, and it should break surface at any moment. More news as it comes off the wire.

FINAL TALLY FROM PIG DISASTER?
------------------------------

We appear to have a final score from the recent fundraiser, via the estimable G-Off, man on a mission:

$1,365 deposited today from the final rolling session $980 deposited by Nesdon a couple weeks ago $100 coinstarred by Nesdon a couple weeks ago $550 in pennies waiting for a winner (includes ones in Jim's trunk) Some other amount of rolled (and unrolled) coins that Jim still has in the trunk of his car.
-------
TOTAL COINS FROM PIG: $2,995 plus whatever is in the trunk.

So there you have it. Adding in the money raised at the door, through the bar take, schwag table, hyperwhiskey wheel, etc., the total is a little over $7000. Thanks again to everyone who donated or participated. A nice start. Who's next?

(WWHD?

Ye gads, more pennies! Who is "Jim" and why is he keeping Clearly Labeled Funds in his trunk? Thousands of coins... he'll wear out his shocks that way, and this is coming from someone who's destroyed many cars through creative overloading. The key is to balance the
load: torso and arms in the trunk, head and legs in the front seat, etc. -- drive slowly and don't look from side to side much, or at all really. Important not to alert the authorities that anything weird might be going on... or have I said too much? Ignore all that. Just pretend the leech isn't climbing up your back and keep typing, at all costs.
Can't reach it with my hands... need some sort of heavy type of swatter, with a long handle. Or perhaps something to just slow it down -- if I can keep it away from my central cortex I can keep working indefinitely, if not, perhaps, at _tip top condition_. It's worked for Dan Rather for many years, after all, and his leech is even bigger than mine.
You can't see it, of course, because it's on his back, and the TV cameras only show him from the front. Wisely, because no one wants to see a giant, blood-sucking leech on network television, unless that leech is George W. Bush. But he only makes prolonged appearances once per year, every year, and his people have plenty of time to disguise his leech as a harmless podium, or Dick Cheney.

When did this leech business begin? Am I the only one who sees them? Must study their
habits....)

THE ART COUNCIL SHOUTS THROUGH A BULLHORN
-----------------------------------------

Owing to technical difficulties, the minutes for last week's Art Council meeting are not available yet. The AC is working to make sure that the minutes are hereafter available to the public by Wednesday of the following week, so that they can be reported here in the Bullhorn.

Here are the previous week's minutes to tide you all over:

http://66.216.120.27/minutes.php3

CHICKEN JOHN FLEES TO MEXICO
----------------------------

(WWHD?

Let's get one thing straight. There's nothing shameful about hopping in a 55-foot GMC bus and heading for the border, especially when that bus is filled with women and alcohol.
Especially not when your name is Chicken John, and your whole life is a complex solution to an non-existent exercise in abstraction.

I knew of him once, back when he was cleaning booths at the old Regal Show World Theater in San Francisco. The Regal Show World, Where You Are King. And Chicken was king, after a fashion. No one cleared a booth faster than Chicken John Rinaldi. The strippers made fun of him, but the admiration from the clientele was palpable; no one put more into the job than that man. I was Night Manager at the O'Farrell Theater at the time and I wanted to hire him away from his current employers -- his skills were valuable within a certain sphere, and I was prepared to double or even triple his salary. But Chicken was a man of honor and refused to break his contract. That was the last time I ever saw him in person, and I shook his hand, even though I knew where that hand had been. But I've heard plenty about him since then.

The details are irrelevant. We can sit here and talk about the time he hijacked a van full of nuns and drove them to Disneyland, or the awful Backstreet Boys ticket counterfeiting scheme he got himself mixed up in -- but why bring up ugly incidents? I still believe he's a man of honor, and if he stole those people and drove them to Mexico, far from the reach of the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, well, he probably had a good reason. Better to think of him down there on the beach in Baja, wearing baggy tourist shorts and some sort of phony nose and glasses contraption, probably, and walking with a fake limp, enjoying the fruits of his horrible misdeeds. And why not? Who else works this hard at being inscrutable?

We can only hope that -- when he finally tucks his tail between his legs and aims the bus homeward -- the US border people go easy on him. They're tall boys, and their fun, theoreticallly, at least, mostly comes from the opportunity to hit people in the kidneys with the long saps they're issued as standard equipment. But my money's on Chicken. No one's mouth works faster when it's about to get hit with a bully club than Chicken's, and the man has a long track record of jumping ship just when the rats start to chew through the hull... these are the kinds of skills that keep a man afloat in wicked times. Not the sort of things that are appreciated by most people, or discussed at all in polite company, but there is a certain kind of book where these deeds are noted and saluted: the ability to grow more lives than a cat is not something to scoff at or discount, and the people who get good at these things live to cause far more trouble for far longer than people who manage stay out of it entirely. Just look at me. Selah.)

BORG2 MAKES GOOD; LOCAL PRESS ECSTATIC
--------------------------------------

Another fine article by Steven "Scribe" Jones in the San Francisco Bay Guardian:

www.sfbg.com/39/19/news_burningman.html

I understand there was a photo that ran in the original print edition. And that this photo was uncredited, and that the photographer remains uncompensated.

Just saying.

(WWHD?

I wrote this when I was alive, stand by it still. A very long time indeed, considering that every day spent in the afterlife is infinite. No one tells you that before you pull the trigger, though, do they? After long consideration, being hooked up to tubes and spoonfed oatmeal would probably be preferable to watching Johnny Carson tell dick jokes for the rest of eternity. Somebody get me out of here, goddamnit.

"The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason."

We were talking about the TV business, right? Wait. Jesus. Whoops -- you have to be careful when you say that around here.)

NEW JRS ANNOUNCEMENT TO NOT MENTION SHIT OR PANTS
-------------------------------------------------

After Chicken John's miserable failure with the first BORG2 announcement in the Jackrabbit Speaks (maybe that's why he ran off to Mexico,) we've been granted another shot at it.
After a laborious process of editing and passing from one committee to the next committee and back to the original author and then back through more committees, BORG2CO IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE LATEST RESULTS OF ITS MARKETING RESEARCH, DESIGNED TO OFFER YOU THE CONSUMER THE GRANDEST OF TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS RIGHT IN THE SAFETY AND COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME, keyed to Rapid Eye Movement studies conducted on federal prisoners, in accordance with state and federal law, and using Newtonian principles, NEW AND IMPROVED, no animals harmed in any way, TEETH BRIGHTER AND SHINIER, guaranteed to get you laid.

I would show it to you, but it doesn't officially exist yet. Look for it in a JRS coming to your mailbox soon.

SO MISCELLANEOUS IT HURTS
-------------------------

The Network Girl would like to direct your attention to:

The Grass-Rootin' BORG2 Artist Tribe
grassrootborg2artists.tribe.net/

"This tribe has been established to get WAY back to basics of art-making before there was Burning Man grants or BORG2 funding. Focusing on meeting the call for more art thru non-monetary resource funding i.e. stuff for free that will give your art project the Whoo hoo for no bling bling or at least very little. This is a place for BORG2 Artists and ALL artist for that matter to list their in-kind donation wish list. This is for the artists who plan to get their Art to Burning Man 2005 no matter what. This shout out is for you"

And Charles Gadeken would like to draw your attention to the BORG2 Art Council's plan to create mad money from the fundraising process:

www.thenetworkgirl.com/Borg2F...aising.htm

Input and suggestions no doubt welcome.

Got an event coming up or an announcement to make? Send them in. We can't guarantee everything submitted will appear in an issue of the b2b, however we will make every effort to accommodate your sincere desire to yell at the general public. PLEASE SEND ME INFORMATION. I can't do this without the people who read the thing.

You can also sign up for the tribe.net thingy at BORG2.tribe.net, where we talk about all sorts of stuff related to BORG2. This is probably the quickest way to receive information and inform others on topics related to BORG2.

"Please get me off this list as quickly as possible."

Ejection seat button:

Does anyone know how hard it would be to devise a kit for recycling all those old laptop LCDs? Selfishly, I want to make a RAID (redundant array of inexpensive displays). Unselfishly, I'd like to see some way to make use of all this old gear people have lying around. LCDs obsolesce more slowly than chips and such, and I can't imagine the displays themselves biodegrace gracefully...

So I bought the very first iMac when they came out in 98.
I worked at an apple store at the time, and not even our top level tech guys could tell me what the "mezzanine" slot was for. it was rumored that someday you might be able to add firewire to it? They stopped making the slot, but i finally found out some products were actully made for it, to add SCSI, extra monitor, and serial,no firewire. not sure what the picture in the last link is?

Rx WANTS YOU!

Join in on a ground breaking international artistic experience!

Rx Gallery invites you to participate in a very unique show. The Mobile Phone Photography Show is open to anyone, anywhere, who has access to a mobile phone camera.

From May 20 through June 18, 2004 participants from all over the world are invited to send in photos taken via their mobile phones. All photos will be accepted. We will display the collected images in continuous rotation on monitors throughout the gallery. On our main wall we will display thumbnail
printouts of the photos, starting, on opening night, with a completely blank wall. During the course of the show, as the images filter in, the wall will gradually fill up with 1000s of examples of this very intimate, dynamic, democratic, soon-to-be ubiquitous form.

Please register here if you would like to participate.

www.rxgallery.com/mpps

REGISTER NOW!

Why register you ask?
We are creating an automated system which will combine your image, name, and country of origin for display in the gallery. In order for us to connect your image and info we need your info in our database. We will also need to filter out spam which will inevitably flood the email address, if you're not registered your images will be filtered out. Don't let this happen, register now!

Following the sun

I posted this in the solar/alternative energy tribe, but haven't gotten any response. Maybe some of you lot can help.

This doesn't really have anything to do with alternative energy, more to do with natural lighting.
I'm looking for a cheap simple system for getting a mirror or and array of mirrors to alter their angle so that the sun reflects off of them, and onto a stationary spot for the duration of the day.
The back side of my house is very gloomy, wet and dark, but further out in the yard, there is sunlight all day long. I'm primarily trying to get some natural light into the back side of the house, as well as prevent mold and moss from growing on the back wall.

Second, there are some areas that have absolutely no natural light at all. I've heard of people using strands of fiber optic to naturally light areas. What can you use as a collector? Is there anything similar to, but much smaller and cheaper, that crazy building in Japan that has the huge array of collectors on the roof that follow the sun?

Anyone have any experiance with PIC chips? I found a nice RF module that I want to use for wireless midi but I need to step up MIDI speed TTL to a faster speed of RS-232. I could drop an OOPIC chip in and call it a day but that would add $160 to the project and would be a terrable waste of prossessing power. Anyone have a favorate PIC chip that could do this?

High-output infra-Red LEDs

Who knows where to get super high output infra red leds on the cheap? I've got a pixelvision camera that I want to turn into a low-light capable device. The ccd in thecamera is super low-quiality so I'm going to need LOTS of IR to get a good response. I spent like $15 at radioshack (yah, I know) and got enough light for a normal camera but not for my hand pxl9000.

So. Berfore experimenting more, I'm looking for a cheap supplier (cheaper than Jameco plz) and if you have different IR solutions than LEDs I'd like to hear those too.

Of course once I know, you'll have to mind yourself in the dark as me and my pixelvision will be about making creepy movies.

After seeing the graffite eschatology project last nite at dorfbotsf I realized that there would have to be a moderator
if you were able submit pictures of grafiti online.
Tag artist's being territorial in nature may photoshop over someone else's tag.. their own tag.

What if I decided to submit a san fran tagged wall with
a grafiti from Spain?

Hi there!

Being a space cadet, I am fascinated by the idea of hurling objects into orbit using a railgun. Obviously, I can't do this at home. So I want to start with a baby railgun. Any suggestions on where to start? Any good websites?

This is an announcement concerning the Software Art and Cultures conference. The information on the Runme-Dorkbot city camp will follow later.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Software Art and Cultures conference aims to provide an opportunity for people researching software art and culture to share their findings. The art movement known by the name "software art" has been active for a few years, and similar phenomena under different names have been developed and researched for a few decades. It is our belief that there is a sufficient body of thinking in this and related areas taking place that there should be a platform for aiding further discovery and enrichment.

Software art is a practice that regards software as a cultural
phenomenon that defines one of the significant aspects of our lives today. Thus, software is not regarded as an invisible layer, but rather as a significant entity contributing to reproduction or change of certain orders, whether aesthetic, cultural, social or political.

Software art creatively questions and redefines software and its ways of functioning.

Software art embraces a wide range of practices: from formalist experiments with code and its execution to software manipulation that does not require any specific knowledge, from alternative tools built from scratch to add-ons and deconstructions, from real software to projects not written in programming languages at all, but which deal with issues relevant to software criticism or culture. Software art deals with a wide range of topics, including social, political, and aesthetic issues. In many cases, it addresses and becomes part of software culture itself.

Software cultures - cultures generated by programmers, designers and software users - are generous sources of thinking on digital culture and society. Software cultures define the way software is created and functions, thus influencing the composition and function of the basic
infrastructures of digital society. In this way, software cultures become inseparable (though largely underestimated) from the forms digital work, social institutions and cultural manifestations take today. Software cultures initiate social change, act in political spheres, create and discover new artistic realms and methodologies.

The conference encourages participation of specialists in various disciplines: multi-disciplinary researchers including non-academics, art theorists, and other thinkers and learners interested in the effects of software and software cultures on art, culture, and society - and in ways to analyze them and challenge existing patterns.

Just when you thought the segway was an overpriced and questionably useful toy for laid off dot commers who cashed their options when the time was right... DARPA has funded the development of a segway platform for autonomous robotics research, and it is already being used by several university and government research labs.

see the website for the details. speakers are eric paulos, ken goldberg, and andrew bennett. it'll be at rxGallery again -it'll be free but people are encouraged to donate $1-$5 for the rxGallery for hosting...for those into it, plan to stay and party after and bring your stuff to show. let me know if you want to 'run' something but if it requires a permit, i am probably one of the last people in SF the fire or police dept will give a permit to so keep that in mind, and we dont want to get will in trouble :)

and if anyone wants to present, perform, or run something for future dorkbot SF let me know in advance!

I've been considering getting some hair removed for a good while now. But when it comes to $200 per session of neck hair (I just happen to know that I will never want a beard on my neck), and they expect it will take 6 sessions to make things permanent. I get to wondering what frequency and wattage laser hair remover lasers operate at. I'm pretty fucking sure that if I had the specs i could do it for hecka hella mega ultra cheaper, and share the wealth with my friends.
The question is. How do them crazy lectrolisys maserss werk? Anyone got the info on this?

9/24 San Francisco Meeting

So here we are gathered on tribe.net, which is, as we were told tonight, 'like friendster, but cooler' and there are no f.... posts.

What is up with that?

No one wants to rant about brilliant grumpy tube synthesizer designers? Or that fly motion capture barney deal? I mean, was that cool or what?

Or do it your self lasers? I wanted more high voltage action, and a more impressive explosion myself, but you can't get everything. Maybe if he'd done a little electolysis demo in that plastic covered area before blowing out the diode...that would have been cool, as the cover went flying, etc.

But safety, well, not first of course, but it really should be in the top five. Or ten. Safety tenth, at the bare minimum!

Right then.
